To Be Happy...
Take Nothing Personally
I made an appointment to get my hair cut and colored at a local beauty college. I asked for the same student, a lovely, warm, young woman, who’d done my hair the previous two times... I KNEW she’d do a great job!
The day of the appointment, I called to make sure we were set, only to find that she was not returning their calls. They’d left numerous messages that I had an appointment with her, but she didn't respond.
THE OLD ME:
Would have been PISSED! I would have been insulted and angry that she didn't care about me and I would have resented that I had to gamble with a new student doing my hair. Grrr...

THE NEW ME:
Got over it and hesitantly crossed my fingers the new girl would do a good job.
A few days later I was in the chair and the new gal was just getting started, when I saw the other woman across the room. She was looking at me with warm, soft eyes and a loving smile.
I'm sorry to say, I suddenly felt resentful and cold and I turned my head away. She’d stood me up! She’d let me down! Now a stranger was doing my hair, someone with whom I was forced to gamble, not knowing whether or not she’d do an adequate job.
But then... I caught myself.
"T-o-r-i..." I warned.... “Knock it off. You have no clue what’s going on with her. It’s NOT PERSONAL. Stop!”
I turned back toward her, forcing a stiff smile, and she came over and affectionately touched my hand, and all my resentment melted away. I felt no desire whatsoever to question her, to grill her, to find out why she’d disappointed me.
I just asked, “How are you?”
She simply nodded and smiled, and I smiled back.
And that was all that needed to be said.
Oh... and the new gal? Did a GREAT job!
